Cube pieces and orientation

Find centers, edges, and corners.

Bring a physical 3×3 cube. An edge has two colors; a corner has three. Each center names its face.

Only the view changes. Hold your real cube as instructed.

You want to practice moving one face.

Hold it like this

In the demo, green is front and red is right. On your cube, choose the front that fits the piece.

Read the moves
  1. Look straight at the front face. Turn only that face a quarter turn clockwise.
  2. Look straight at the front face. Turn only that face a quarter turn counterclockwise.

Did the front return to where it started? Now find a two-color edge.

My cube looks different

Not every color needs to match the example. Compare the piece you are working on and the nearby centers. If no case matches, check the step-by-step help below.

Keep the yellow center up and the white center down. Keep the same front until the whole move sequence ends.

Before moving on

Can you keep the yellow center up and point to one two-color edge and one three-color corner?

The picture is an example. Check the written condition on your own cube.

Stuck? Review this step

Start by checking your grip and the face names. Green front/red right is the demo convention; your cube may have a different color scheme. Do not remove pieces or move stickers. Compare after a whole sequence. Back and Replay change only the screen. To undo physical moves, reverse their order and direction on the real cube. Take a break whenever needed.

  • The screen is a practice example. It does not read or recognize your cube.
  • F front, B back, R right, L left, U up, D down. A letter turns only that face.
  • A prime (') means reverse; 2 means a half turn. Clockwise is seen looking straight at the face you turn.

What do the letters mean?

R right, L left, U top, D bottom, F front, B back. Look straight at the face you turn: a letter means a clockwise quarter turn, a prime (′) means counterclockwise, and 2 means a half turn.
